CONTENTMENT IS A VIRTUE (Pt 1)

My name is Segun Oluwayomi, and I am blessed to be a gospel saxophonist, a music minister, a husband, and a father. But most importantly, I am a servant of God who has seen His grace shine through even the toughest times. The journey I’ve been on has been anything but smooth, yet through every twist, I’ve learned about faith, patience, and contentment—trusting God’s timing, especially when life doesn’t make sense.

Being in gospel music ministry often feels like giving everything to an empty room, hoping someone, somewhere is being touched. I’ve had my share of trials, rejections, and temptations, faced with offers that looked promising but had hidden traps. During those times, I learned to pause, to listen for God’s direction, and to obey. Each chapter of this book captures pieces of that journey, lessons in finding peace and joy in God’s plan, even when it seemed confusing.

This is my story, a reminder that God’s timing is always perfect, and His blessings will come as we hold on, trust, and stay true to His calling.

CHAPTER 1: THE GIFT OF WAITING

Waiting isn’t easy. I know we’ve all felt it—the eagerness to see God’s promises come to pass right away. There’s excitement as we envision success, recognition, the sense of “finally making it.” But God often has a different timeline. Sometimes, He makes us wait—not to hold us back but to prepare us for what’s ahead.

I remember those early days, pouring my heart out at small events, hoping someone would notice. I thought if I kept going, my big break would come. Yet time passed, and there was silence. No recognition, no doors opening. I began to question myself: “Is this worth it? Am I doing something wrong?”

Then, after one late performance in an empty church hall, as I packed up my saxophone, I realized something: I wasn’t playing for the crowd; I was playing for God. It hit me that every note, every song, was a gift to Him, whether or not there was applause. That night, I found peace in the waiting, learning that sometimes God makes us wait to remind us why we’re here and who we’re truly serving.

CHAPTER 2: TRUSTING GOD’S TIMING OVER THE WORLD’S

Today’s world moves fast. Success seems to be about getting ahead as quickly as possible. But God doesn’t rush. I had to learn this when friends around me were achieving big things, going abroad, and building careers, while I felt like I was standing still.

There was a time I felt so frustrated I wanted to take matters into my own hands. I thought if I just pushed harder or compromised a little, I could get ahead. But then, I came across Psalm 37:7, “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him.” It reminded me that this journey wasn’t about speed but about faithfulness.

So, I let go of comparison. I chose to trust God’s process for my life, and in time, I realized that true success is not in how quickly we reach a destination but in the growth, learning, and trust we develop on the way there.

CHAPTER 3: FAITH BEYOND LIMITS – A FATHER’S SACRIFICE

My father’s faith is something that inspires me every day. After my two older sisters were born, my parents were told they could no longer have children. But my father believed God had a plan that included a son.

He took a bold step, moving to Ilorin to work as a laborer at CAC Oke Ayo in Sabo Oke. For five years, he laid bricks, not for money, but as a way of dedicating his dream to God, praying for a son. And, five years later, I was born. His faith wasn’t just talk; it was real action. My father’s sacrifice taught me that sometimes, to see your dreams fulfilled, you have to step out in faith and trust God, even when it seems impossible.

CHAPTER 4: THE COURAGE TO WALK AWAY

After I released my first album, Arugbo Ojo, things started shifting. People were noticing me, and the offers began to come in. One particular offer came from a man with international connections. He promised doors would open, but there was a condition—I had to join a secret society.

It was a tempting offer: fame, money, travel—everything I’d prayed for seemed within reach. But a quiet voice inside told me, “This is not for you.” With a heavy heart, I walked away. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made, but I knew I couldn’t compromise my faith. Today, I look back knowing it was the right choice, as God has taken me places I couldn’t have dreamed of—without any shortcuts.

CHAPTER 5: A LEGACY OF FAITH OVER FAME

One of my earliest lessons on contentment came from something I overheard as a child. My father, during a financially difficult time, was encouraged to join a secret society for wealth. I remember him saying, “I would rather die poor than risk the future of my children.” Those words left a deep mark on me. He chose faith and integrity over wealth, a choice that has shaped my own journey

CHAPTER 6: STANDING FIRM ON FAITH

Once, I was offered a significant sum—600,000 naira—to play at a high-profile event, but there was one catch: “Do not mention the name of Jesus.” That condition threw me off. I knew I couldn’t deny Jesus, not even for that amount. I returned the cheque, choosing my faith over financial gain. Just weeks later, I received an even bigger opportunity from a multinational company that respected my beliefs. That experience taught me that when we put God first, He provides in ways we couldn’t imagine.

CHAPTER 7: THE BLESSING OF CONTENTMENT

My journey has shown me that true contentment isn’t about having everything but about finding peace with where God has placed you. Looking back, I see God’s hand in every season of waiting, every moment of trust. My life is proof that God’s blessings come without sorrow and that His timing is always perfect. Contentment is a gift God gives when you trust Him, and in time, those seeds of faith grow into blessings beyond what you ever imagined.

Epilogue: THE JOURNEY CONTINUES

This journey of contentment, faith, and trust is far from over. Every day, I learn a little more about relying on God. My prayer is that my story encourages you to trust His timing, find peace in His plans, and believe that the wait is worth it. Stay true to your calling, trust God’s process, and you’ll see that His blessings are greater than anything we could ever imagine.
